International Women's Day 2023
Year 10 Somerville House Digital Technology and Solutions students were guests of Australian Computing Society (ACS) ICT Gateway to Industry Schools Project (GISP) who hosted a table at the Women in Digital breakfast celebrating #InternationalWomensDay (IWD) on the 8th of March 2023.
Somerville Girls were the only school present, and students had the opportunity to have one-to-one discussions with the panel of well-established inspiring technology professionals. Students also had an opportunity to discuss the career journeys so far of emerging and final year university students who were guests of CISCO.
During the breakfast the ACS ICT GISP table was visited my many interested industry professionals wanting to share their experiences and pearls of wisdom. One of the messages from a panellist that resonated with students was ‘just get scrappy’ this is an important message especially for girls who tend to self-select out of the career race, and feel they need to know all there is to know before applying for a role.
‘You cannot be what you cannot see’ is a quote shared by Women in Digital, and I too believe this is to be the case - especially amongst girls,” Cynthia Gusman-Nolan, ACS ICT GISP Project Manager.
The breakfast was held at Emporium Hotels down the road from Somerville House at South Bank Brisbane, with over 200 guests. There were men also present (in the minority) including Mr Justin Bryan Head of Technologies at Somerville House who joined the girls at the breakfast to celebrate such an important day in recognising diversity that goes beyond gender. Somerville House is an ACS ICT GISP school.
